talk to school leaders here in maryland. >> reporter: just three days after life in newtown, connecticut came to a terrifying halt, residents have gun the painful process of moving on. monday saw the first two funerals for last friday's mass shooting at sandy hook 6-year- old noah and jack were laid to rest. >> you shouldn't be at a 6-year- old's funeral. i mean, this is a devastating event. it just keeps getting more heartbreaking. >> reporter: he was a kind and caring boy. his twin sister survived the shooting in another classroom. at his funeral, friends wore sports gear in honor of the boy who loved wrestling, football, stand new york giants. he was buried in a giants jersey. >> the people that spoke, there were little stories about jack

being in heaven tossing footballs at the angels and knocking the halos off of their head. everyone got a chuckle out of that. >> reporter: the school will remained closed as police continue their investigation and may not reopen. classes are resume in other schools nearby. on monday, many families brought their children to this recreation center for a day of fun. meanwhile, police have been learning more about how the killer went about his killing spree. they might never learn why. in newtown connecticut for wjz eyewitness news. >> while the victim's families struggle to cope with what happened, many want to know what caused the 20-year-old gunman to snap. we are live with new insight from his college classmates who say they knew a very different adam lanza. >> reporter: friends in school give their perspective of this apparently troubled young man.

remembering adam if german class. >> on one side, he did something unspeakable. on the other, that's not how i remember him. i remember him as the nice kid that i sat near in class and, you know, we joked. he's laugh, that kind of thing. >> reporter: it was the spring of 2009, both were enrolled in connecticut state university while lanza was still in high school. >> we were all hanging outside of class and we were like, you want to grab a drink with us? he said no, i can't, i'm 17. >> reporter: he was also being home schooled at the time. he took 7 college-level courses, received several as in computer classes, and also one in american history. his overall gpa with 3.26. >> said he was sick and asked where the classroom was. when we walked in, she was getting his assignments from the teacher. >> reporter: her friends told scott pelley she told them adam

has asperger's. >> he was on medication. she home schooled him at home because he couldn't deal with the school classes sometimes so she just home schooled adam at home. that was her life. >> reporter: ryan crab who baby sat for the lanza's when he was about 10 got a glimpse of how difficult he could be. >> i got instructions to never turn my back on him. >> reporter: his parents divorced in 2009. cbs news spoke to the mediator in that divorce. he says lanza's parents seemed to love him and wanted only the best for him. >> thank you. and on the first day of school since the shooting, some parents sent their children to school with new anxieties about their safety, of course. we spoke to school chiefs here in maryland about how they're keeping students safe. >> reporter: school leaders

sprang into action launching a thorough review of security at all baltimore schools. in light of what happened in newtown, school superintendent says those changes will make schools safer. >> we have changed our focus to make sure that it's all being proactive. it's great to have protocols in place to react, but you have to do something on the front end. >> reporter: increased police presence. police provided extra patrols around the schools monday because school leaders know what happened in newtown. >> it could happen anywhere. >> reporter: she says all of her schools held faculty meetings to review emergency plans in each building and to discuss the safety measures in place for monitoring visitors. >> we train monthly to rehearse the security plans and that

should this unlikely event, this unnatural type of disaster that staff could respond the way they did in connecticut. >> reporter: most brought in counselors to help students still struggling to cope with what happened in connecticut. >> only some schools in baltimore and howard counties have security buzzers at the door to control who can enter the building. now officials are looking into installing all schools with the secure system. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the tragedy in newtown. a security breech at one baltimore city school led to a knife fight and aarrest. a woman forced her way into the national academy foundation carrying a birthday cake. she said she was visiting a relative. she did not have permission and during an altercation with a staff member, a knife was pulled. there were minor injuries and that woman is now facing charges. a dangerous two-alarm fire

tears through a baltimore county home. take a look as the house is engulfed by fire. firefighters say two children escaped after they noticed the fire at the rear of the home. investigators are still trying to determine the cause. dense fog is hanging over maryland tonight causing dangerous road conditions and major delays at the airport. we're live with complete coverage. we tell you where the visibility is worse. first we'll go to the major travel problems it's causing. >> reporter: you can probably see the fog is still pretty bad out here. it just started to rain. earlier today the fog was backing up traffic and at bwi, there were a lot of cancellations. the lights of the inner harbor dimmed by a thick and hazy fog settling in over baltimore city. >> i couldn't see my neighbor's house. >> reporter: the fog forced several schools to delay

classes. as the mist hovered over roads, drivers had almost no visibility. >> it was really thick and it was really hard driving in too. >> reporter: foggy conditions caused one driver to crash into and take out a telephone pole. >> when ever it drizzles like this, it's like it's black ice. >> reporter: some of the biggest problems were here where fliers ran into a travel nightmare. >> every single flight's canceled. >> reporter: extensive cancellations across the board on all carriers. a situation best described as? >> hectic and depressing. >> reporter: as travelers wait for the mist to clear, some people are enjoying what they consider a beautiful yet dreary day. >> it's very shadowy and mysterious. we were thinking of edgar allen poe and how poetic it looks. >> reporter: reporting live in federal hill for wjz eyewitness

news. >> bob is in the first warning weather center with what with deexpect tonight and tomorrow morning. >> officially we do have some advisories this effect. you can see a dense fog advisory until 6:00 a.m. all of central maryland, a few spots will have visibilities under a quarter mile. there's some good rain developing around the ridge right now that's going to help break up some of the fog. look at the radar. things are beginning to move a little bit now. that may help to stir up the atmosphere enough that for a while we may clear out the fog. it may come back as you're going to work. do expect to see a big improvement tomorrow as we'll finally get rid of the fog. we'll have a full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. the nation tonight mourns the loss of a decorated war hero. senator daniel inuea passed away at the age of 88.

it is raining and 49 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete forecast is coming up. a powerful cyclone, winds measuring up to 135 miles an hour ripped through the deserted streets in fiji. 3500 people were evacuated to shelters ahead of the storm. no deaths or injuries have been reported so far.

four people were killed in samoa when cyclone evan hit over the weekend. a tragic scene in kansas, two police officers are gunned down while investigating possible drug activity. they approached a car in a grocery store parking lot. a 22-year-old got out and shot both officers in the head and then drove off. he was tracked down at a nearby home and an armed stand off ensued. police say the suspect came out with a gun and officers opened fire and killed him. several relatives of washington redskins star london fletcher are arrested. a riot broke out. he and his family say cleveland fans targeted their section because they wore redskins gear and security guards made the situation even worse. >> i see this officer taser him, five more officers beating

on him. i'm like, why is you snatching on him? he's going to jail and then they came and started attacking our family. >> his aunt was treated for a neck injury and released. the redskins line backer adds that four relatives are still in police custody but have not been charged. the garmin factory fire that killed 112 people was the work of sabotage. a government panel says last month's fire was probably set by someone who worked there. they are also asking for the owner to be punished because the factory lacked emergency exits. managers locked the gates and told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off. a major apartment fire on the eastern shore had people jumping oh it of windows to save their lives. we are live with the details of a terrifying night. >> reporter: the fire chief says the building has been destroyed. fortunately, no lives were lost during this fast-moving fire.

smoke and fire filled a three- story apartment building in came bridge. residents were forced to jump from the windows. >> in 35 years, i've never seen people jump out of a building. >> reporter: he describes the terrifying moments. >> i had five or six people just laid out in the alleyway. these people had jumped from second and third-floor windows. that was the end of them and they couldn't move. >> reporter: roy saw the fire and one man's quick actions to help people stranded upstairs. >> first thing we saw when we got out here was flames shooting out the window. all we could see was the thick, black smoke coming from the roof. this guy pulled up in a red van and he was letting people climb out of the window and on to his van to escape from the fire. >> reporter: 21 residents suffered injuries as they tried to escape and two firefighters were also hurt.

one man who lives in the building says he's thankful he made it out alive. >> i'm lucky i'm not injured. >> i'm scared to think what everybody else had to go through. >> reporter: fire officials add that smoke alarms alerted people to the blaze. >> thank you. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. a classic toy gets an updated look thanks to a little help from a 13-year-old girl from new jersey. she petitioned to make easy bake ovens in colors her little brother would like. they will market them in black, silver, and blue. the future emeril's and bobby flays can have an easy bake oven. >> we had one, absolutely. >> you did? did you bake things? >> my daughter had one of

stirring up the atmosphere. we'll see some periods of rain tonight, but overnight in the morning hours, we should start seeing a change as the winds begin to shift more out of the north and northwest and the west that will clear things out. expect to see a good deal of sunshine and drier conditions coming our way. big storms across mississippi and georgia. that's all off to the southeast of our region. you kind of see it developing there off to the east. some steadier rain offshore now, but not too much longer from now we'll start seeing some breaks. we do expect to see some sun tomorrow. it looks like a much drier day. this mild air, it won't be until the end of the week when we're really going to cool down. another storm will come through the area with a chance of more showers on thursday. then we'll cool down just for
